Paper Cup Printing Machine

Oct 21, 2025

There are three main types of materials used in paper cup printing: substrate, coating and printing ink. The following is an analysis of the types of materials, their properties and their compatibility with printing processes:
I.Substrates: Paper cup structural foundations
Chemical Wood Pulp Base Paper (White Cardboard)
Source: Made from plant fibers such as coniferous and hardwood wood, they are pulped, wooled, refined and screening processes to ensure they are evenly fiber distribution.
Features:
Non-toxic and tasteless: meets the Basic Paper Toilet Standards for Food Packaging (GB11680) and is suitable for direct contact with food.
Hardness and smoothness: High hardness prevents paper jams, while smoothness ensures a clear printing design. Proper volume is good for shaping.
High Whiteness: Keep paper whiteness, no fluorescent agent is needed to improve the aesthetics of printing design.
Purpose: As the main raw material of paper cups, the cup body is formed by mechanical processing (such as die cutting and folding). Composites
PE/Paper Composites: one or both sides coated with polyethylene (PE). Suitable for hot drinks on one side (above 90°C) and cold drinks on the other (moisture-proof and leakproof).
PE/AI/Paper Composites: aluminum foil layer added for long-term storage of paper cups (e.g., canned food packaging) with barrier properties and heat resistance.
Plant Fiber Substrates: Composite materials such as bamboo fiber and coffee grounds are used in biodegradable paper cups, providing environmentally friendly and renewable resources.

II. Coating Materials: key to Functionality and safety
Polyethylene (PE) coating
Property:
Non-toxic and tasteless: meets the Hygiene Standards of Polyethylene Molded Products for Food Packaging
Chemical stability: acid-base resistance, water resistance, excellent heat sealing properties.
Balanced Physical Properties: excellent cold resistance, low temperature brittle crack resistance.
Application:
Single-sided PE Coating: Coating the inside of a hot drink glass to prevent penetration of hot liquid.
Double PE coating: Coating the inside and exterior of a cold drink glass to improve moisture resistance. Process requirements: The lamination temperature must be strictly controlled to prevent peroxidation of the substrate, resulting in poor heat sealing.
Degradable Coatings
Polylactic Acid (PLA) coatings: Made from plant-based materials such as corn starch and sucrose, they are biodegradable and environmentally friendly but require additional waterproofing.
Biobased coatings, such as modified starch coatings, are used in short-term paper cups to reduce environmental impacts.

III. Printing Inks: Balance Mode, Render and Security
Offset Inks
Features: High color saturation, excellent gradient, fine lines, but contains organic solvents that can leave harmful residue.
Limitations: due to the environmental nature of ink, not suitable for eating paper cups.
Purpose: Suitable for outside packaging or non-food contact paper cups printing.
Flexographic Water-Based Inks
Features: good water, non-toxic and tasteless, environmental protection, quick drying.
Advantages: Simple mechanical structure, low equipment cost (40% less than offset printing), suitable for small printing shops.
Purpose: A mainstream paper cup printing method, especially for hot beverage cups that do not require internal printing. Screen Printing Ink
Features: Soft texture, wide applicability (paper, fabric, glass, etc.), but low pattern fidelity.
Purpose: Special-shaped paper cups (such as cones) or small batch printing.

IV. INTRODUCTION Compatibility of Material and Printing Processes
PE Coating and Flexographic Printing
Compatibility: Polyethylene coating surface smooth, flexible version of the strong adhesion of water-based ink, environmental friendly, in line with food packaging requirements.
The hot drink cup adopts single-sided PE coating and flexographic printing, which ensures high cost efficiency and high performance while ensuring heat resistance.
Degradable Coating and Screen Printing
Compatibility: Screen printing inks is suitable for a wide range of materials and can be used to print simple patterns on PLA paper cups.
For example, eco-friendly paper cups utilize a plant fiber substrate, PLA coating, screen printing, and balance biodegradability with branding.
Hardness and Die Cutting Precision of Substrates
Requirements: High substrate stiffness and good smoothness, minimize paper jamming and wrinkling during die-cutting, ensure the accuracy of fan size. Case: highprecision paper cup machine requires the appropriate base volume and thickness, die cutting fan edge smooth, easy to automatic forming.

V. Material Selection Recommendations
Hot Drinks Cups: Made of polyethylene/paper composites (one-sided lamination) and flexographic water-based ink for both heat resistance and environmental protection.
Cold Cups: Double sided PE laminate printed in flexo or a PLA-coated plant fiber substrate (waterproof required).
Long-term storage of paper cups: Choose PE/AI/paper composites to ensure barrier properties and heat resistance.
Environmental considerations: Bamboo fiber/coffee grounds plus bio-based coatings are suitable for short-term use (e.g. exhibitions and events).
